SEIU MEMBERS FIGHT BACK AGAINST SEIU 'DICTATORSHIP'
In Spring 2007, a civil war broke out within the SEIU. At the center of the war was the issue of SEIU's national leaders negotiating so-called "sweetheard deals" with employers in the health care industry while excluding and, allegedly, 'selling out' members and workers.
Since then, accusations have flown about Andy Stern's union model of "corporate unionism," scandals have errupted, union trials, a trusteeship imposed and, as of late, attempts by tens of thousands of SEIU members to decerty the union as their agent.
At the heart of the nursing home alliance deal was a cold-blooded tradeoff, where the SEIU would use its California Democratic Party lobbying clout to remove quality-of-care requirements from legislation boosting Medi-Cal funding for nursing homes. Alliance labor contracts, meanwhile, severely limited workers' clout at the workplace.
Following the revelation that SEIU union bosses at the national level had allegedly sold out many of their members in California, the local leadership (UHW) fought with its national union. In return, the national SEIU bosses began to crack down on the local by holding a trial. However, according to the UHW members and leaders, the national union's intention all along was to impose a trusteeship on the local.
As the videos at right and below show, the battle against what many view as dictatorial rule within the SEIU is still raging and very contentious.
