UNITED AUTO WORKERS Where the Members' Money Goes as Members' Jobs Disappear
As the unionized American auto industry gasps what may be its last breath and clings to government bailout money as life support, the UAW continues collecting its dues from its members. And, as UAW members lose jobs by the tens of thousands and despite losing nearly two-thirds of its membership over the last several decades, the United Auto Workers still seem more than willing to spend the members' dues money like it's an endless stream.
In 2007, the international union, headquartered in Detroit, raked in nearly $169 million in per capita taxes (the mney taken from UAW locals). When combined with its other receipts from interest payments and other receipts the UAW international raked in an astounding $327,637, 840. So where did all the money go?
Well, beside the nearly $35 million the UAW has tied up in its Black Lake Golf Resort and Education Center (that the UAW owns and maintains), the UAW has a lot of other expenses that its members' dues pay for.
