UNITE-HERE'S D-I-V-O-R-C-E
(Click above to hear a classic!)

A mere five years after the merger that created UNITE-HERE, the union's bosses are fighting each other over control of the union, its $4.5 billion bank, and hundreds of thousands of members.

On the one side is Bruce Raynor, current co-president and former president of UNITE.  On the other, is Raynor's fellow co-president John Wilhelm, former president of HERE.  And, in the middle of the mess is the interloping president of the SEIU,
Andy Stern, who is attempting to bring one or both factions of UNITE-HERE into his union.
  • Jan. 2009 - Bruce Raynor sues Wilhelm and others, claiming they are trying to seize control of the union
  • Feb. 2009 - Raynor pushes to dissolve union but is blocked by HERE-controlled majority of executive board
  • NY Daily News reports SEIU boss Andy Stern has lawyers and staff working to take UNITE into SEIU
  • Mar. 2009 - Delegates (not members) vote to disaffiliate from UNITE-HERE;
  • HERE-controlled faction denies vote, claiming it is unconstitutional
