THE UNITED STEELWORKERS—
A UNION MEDLEY OF MERGERS & AFFILIATIONS

The Steelworkers' union claims to represent a diverse membership employed in a large variety of industries and, while that may be the case, it belies the real reason the union has entered those diverse industries.

The fact is, the Steelworkers' union has a history of having smaller and often weaker unions merge into the Pittsburgh-based union.

Below is a listing of known mergers and affiliations of smaller unions into what is now known as the United Steel, Paper and Forestry, Rubber, Manufacturing, Energy, Allied Industrial and Service Workers International Union (aka the United Steelworkers).

1944 - Aluminum Workers of America
1967 - International Union of Mine, Mill and Smelter Workers
1971 - United Stone and Allied Product Workers of America
1972 - District 50, the Allied and Technical Workers of America
1985 - Upholsterers International Union of North America
1995 - United Rubber, Cork, Linoleum & Plastic Workers of America (URW)
1996 - Aluminum, Brick and Glass Workers Union (ABG)
1999 - Canadian Division of the Transportation Communications International Union
2003 - American Flint Glass Workers Union (AFGWU)
2004 - Industrial, Wood and Allied Workers of Canada (IWA Canada)
2005 - Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union (PACE)
