WHAT A UNION AUTHORIZATION CARDS SHOULD REALLY SAY (Would you sign this?)
Unfortunately, unlike cigarettes, alcohol and even condoms, union authorization cards do not come with warning labels for workers.
If they did, perhaps fewer workers would be manipulated and tricked into making decisions (like signing a union's authorization card) that they later often come to regret.
If union organizers really wanted to be truthful with employees, their union authorization cards would be written like this:
UNION AUTHORIZATION CARD (Please read the warning and agreement below before signing this union authorization card.)
WARNING: Signing This Card May Be Hazardous to Your Job
A union organizer may entice you into signing this card by making you promises that cannot be legally guaranteed.
By signing this card, a union can unionize you without you or your co-workers voting whether or not to become unionized by secret ballot.
Becoming unionized through your signature on this card may cause your job to come under the control of someone who may not have your best interests at heart—and who can cause you financial harm.
By signing this card, you may be subjecting yourself to union rules that, if violated, can lead to a union trial that may cost you hundreds or thousands of dollars in union fines.
Your signing this card may cost you hundreds of dollars in union dues, fees and assessments.
If you do not live in a right-to-work state, your refusal to pay union dues may cause you to be fired under a "union income security clause".
Your becoming unionized through the signing of this card may weaken your company’s standing in the marketplace and lead to the extinction of your job.
Your becoming unionized through the signing of this card may cause you to go out on strike, lose hundreds or thousands of dollars, and risk being permanently replaced in the event of an economic strike.
Please indicate your agreement with the following statements by signing below:
By signing below, I agree to turn my worklife, my job, as well as the financial well-being of my family over to the union.
By signing below, I agree that, although the union is my paid representative, it does not have to represent me to my liking.
By signing below, I agree to subject myself to all of the union's rules and directives and agree that the union may put me on trial and fine me for failure to follow the union's rules and directives.
By signing below, I agree to pay all union dues, fees, fines, as well as special assessments, as directed by the union and/or its officers
By signing below, I agree to go out on strike if ordered to do so by the union.
By signing below, I agree that I may lose wages and benefits as a result of negotiations between my employer and the union.
By signing below, I agree that unionization may lead to my company becoming uncompetitive and my job being eliminated as a result of such non competitiveness.
By signing below, I agree to hold the union, its officers and agents harmless for all claims that I otherwise may make in any agency, tribunal or state or federal court for the union's failure to accomplish anything of value for me or my family, as well as any other financial harm the union may cause me or my family.
By my signature below, I, the undersigned, hereby affirm that I agree with all of the above and hereby authorize the union to represent me for the purposes of collective bargaining with my employer.
